Wealthsimple Referral Code Not Working? Here's Why
It's a frustrating spot to be in: you signed up, you're pretty sure you followed the steps, and the $25 CAD bonus still hasn't shown up. Before you assume something is broken, know that in the overwhelming majority of cases, the bonus didn't pay out because one specific eligibility condition wasn't met, not because of a glitch.
Below are the five most common reasons the referral bonus fails to pay, in roughly the order we see them, along with what you can actually do about each one.
1. The deposit came from inside Wealthsimple, not from an external institution
The single most common cause. The referral bonus requires a deposit from an external bank or financial institution. Money that arrives in your account because another Wealthsimple client sent it to you, or because it came from a Wealthsimple-issued bonus or promotional credit, does not count toward the funding requirement, no matter the amount.
What to do: make (or re-make) a deposit that originates from your own external bank account, ideally the same one linked to your Wealthsimple profile, and confirm it clears.
2. The deposit was under $100 CAD
The current minimum qualifying deposit is $100 CAD from an external institution. A smaller test deposit, a partial transfer, or a deposit that hasn't finished settling yet won't trigger the bonus, even if a code is correctly applied to your account.
What to do: check your account balance and deposit history to confirm at least $100 CAD has actually cleared from an external source. If you're just short, top up the difference.
3. You missed the 7-day retroactive window
This one only applies if you funded your account before entering a referral code. In that case, Wealthsimple gives you a hard 7-day window from your first qualifying deposit to add a code retroactively. Miss that window and the deposit can no longer be tied to any referral code, permanently.
Important nuance: if you haven't funded your account yet, there is no deadline at all, you can enter a code any time before your first deposit and get the full 30-day funding window from that point.
What to do: check the date of your first external deposit. If it's within the last 7 days, enter a code in the Rewards Hub immediately. If it's been longer, this bonus cycle unfortunately can't be recovered.
4. You're not actually a new client
Referral bonuses are one-time-per-person across your entire Wealthsimple profile, not per account or per product. If you've ever opened any Wealthsimple account in the past, even one you closed, even if it only held a TFSA years ago, opening a new Cash or Invest account today does not make you a "new client" for referral purposes. The system checks your identity, not just the specific account you're funding.
What to do: unfortunately, there's no workaround here. If you're a returning client, referral bonuses don't apply to you regardless of which code you use.
5. You missed the 30-day funding deadline
Once a referral code is successfully applied, the clock starts on a 30-day window to make your first qualifying deposit. If that window closes before you fund the account with at least $100 CAD from an external source, the referral relationship expires and the bonus opportunity is lost.
What to do: check when you entered your code. If you're still inside the 30-day window, fund your account now. If the window has already closed, contact Wealthsimple support to ask whether the code can be reapplied, this is decided case-by-case and isn't guaranteed.
Quick checklist
Before contacting support, confirm: (1) your deposit came from an external bank, not another Wealthsimple client or a bonus credit, (2) it was at least $100 CAD, (3) you entered a code within 7 days of that deposit if you funded before adding a code, (4) you've never had a Wealthsimple account before, and (5) you funded within 30 days of entering the code.
FAQ
How long does the bonus take to arrive once everything qualifies?
Once your deposit meets the minimum and your code has been correctly applied, the bonus is typically processed within 24 hours and deposited into your Wealthsimple Cash account. If it's been longer than a few business days and all the conditions below are met, contact Wealthsimple support directly.
Who do I contact if I still think I qualify?
Contact Wealthsimple support directly through the app or website. This is an independent, unaffiliated site, we have no access to your account and cannot look up, adjust, or expedite individual referral bonus payments. Wealthsimple's support team is the only party who can review your specific account.
Can I use a referral code if I've had a Wealthsimple account before?
No. Referral bonuses are for genuinely new clients only. If you've ever had any Wealthsimple product under your name, even one you closed years ago, you're not eligible for a new-client referral bonus, regardless of which code you enter.
